Chronicling one of the most significant moments of a couple is taxing because it involves pressure from many people whether you are doing it professionally or for a friend. It is important to understand the needs of the subject even if some of the guests have the tendency to be complete smug. OK, so you have been asked if you’re able to do this task of taking pictures on their special day. Then there are some questions you have to ask yourself. Most importantly you need to be honest against yourself and the newly married couple. If you feel uncertain if you’re able to do it, then you must speak your mind about this. If you do take on the job then there are lots of things you can do to prepare yourself in advance:

1. Make sure you are confident in yourself and your camera equipment.
2. Take time to really get to know the married couple.
3. Ask the married couple about their wishes and what they are looking for with the photographs.
4. Always have enough batteries ready.
5. Think about your choice in equipment, location, camera settings and more…

Wedding photography is about capturing the closeness between the married couple, so make sure that this is the goal from the beginning.

In the Church:

Arrange with the newly married couple and the priest when you can photograph. With the modern digital cameras we have these days; you can easily take good pictures indoors without using a flash. Then you won’t destroy the nice atmosphere in the room with flashing lights. Here are some more tips:

1. Turn off your flash.
2. Make sure you set your camera white balance to “indoor”.
3. ISO to 400 or 800

All these things should be tested in advance, so there are no surprises. Use as low ISO-values as possible, in order to reduce picture-noise, but make sure that the shutter time doesn’t go over about 1/60 sec. Remember to dress up discreetly, and move around as quietly as you can.

Composing the pictures:

Try to get the lines in the picture lead your eye to the motive. Find natural objects that puts a nice “frame” around the couple, this will enhance the impact of the couple. You shouldn’t have pictures showing unnecessary objects in the background though. Remember to take lots of pictures, especially of : speeches, the wedding cake, wedding dance.
